Don't wait. Many students come into college with poor reading skills. They wait until they are really far behind in their reading and assignments and drop out. This does not have to be you!
One of the biggest tips is how you use your notes. You don't wait until the last few days before the exam to study your notes. You will have forgotten much of the content by then. Instead, you review your notes the day after you took them down and then regularly until the day of the exam. You quiz yourself on what you can remember from your notes each time, trying not to read the entire set. The nice thing is that you can do this while you are commuting to school, while you are doing dishes or any other mindless task. You can study and do chores at the same time.
It is tough to know during your freshman year how much studying you need to do in order to succeed. Some of that understanding will come by trial and error. Reading is Key
The reality is that college life revolves more around hitting the books or etexts at home and doing assignments than there is time in spent in class. Writing
If you are not a good writer, you may need help in improving your skills in order to succeed, especially with writing research papers. Your college will likely have a class that you will attend to help you improve your writing skills. If you still need help, you can enlist the assistance of a qualified writing tutor. They will look over your work with you, making suggestions and providing mini-lessons on the areas of your writing where you are weaker. Their goal is to help you be a better writer with every session, learning as you go, using your own work.Notes
Another big key for freshman and all college students is great notes. Most all of your professors will lecture, and you will need notes. The best note-taking style is the one that suits you. Some people like the very linear, Cornell-style notes, where the topic is listed on the left side of the page and the notes are on the right. Creative thinkers may like the mind-mapping notes that put the topic in the middle, with the sub-topics like branches snaking out from the tree. Others may like to use specific graphic organizers, based upon the topic. The most important thing about taking notes is that they are in the form that works best for you.Using the Notes

E-Cards for Foreign Language Study
If you have a foreign language class, use e-flashcards to study your new words. Anki is a really good choice. The e-cards allow you to save the word on one side and the definition on the other. Each time you run through your cards, you will tell Anki if the word was easy or hard. The harder words will be presented each time until they get easier. The easier words will be presented less frequently but so you will not forget them. You can quickly study a pile of Anki e-cards very quickly. It is tough to know during your freshman year how much studying you need to do in order to succeed.
